TRINITY CHURCH

Trinity Church has the distinction of being the only place—besides in the hearts of his countrymen of course—that Alexander Hamilton can be said to be “still here.” In accordance with his final wishes, he was buried on July 14, 1801.
Though his final years had been expended in something of a political wilderness, his death by the bullet of Aaron Burr caused a sensation, and the funeral was large and well-attended (although a collection had to be taken to fund it, as Hamilton was not in solid financial shape when he passed away).
It is not known how often Hamilton attended Trinity Church, if at all. He was, however, a member of the church—and his family had extensive ties to it.
Trinity Church dates to the very late 1600s after Great Britain had forced the Netherlands to surrender the colony.
The building was completely burned in the Great Fire of 1776. At the time of Hamilton’s burial, the second Trinity Church to exist at the site had been consecrated.
